2017-2018 School Year Begins!
Welcome back! The first week back is always hectic, so now that things have settled down a bit, I wanted to take a second to fill everyone in on what's going on around Akins Choir and Piano this year!
Washington D.C. Trip
I'm so excited to announce that we'll be going to Washington, D.C. for our spring trip this year. The students really turned up their performance level last year and did a great job. Their work ethic convinced me to take them somewhere fantastic this year - D.C. I always tell them, I am not a travel planner. I will not take you on vacation. However, I will help facilitate an educational experience, and that's why this year's trip with be to our nation's capital.
This year will be the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr's assassination, which was a very sad and significant day for our nation. I was contacted a few months ago by an organization about bringing our choir to sing with a mass choir/band/orchestra that will pay tribute to MLK. The namesake of our school, Dr. Akins would be proud to see his students going to D.C. to remember a man that worked hard for civil rights and stood up for what was right.
The trip is only required for 6th period students, and completely optional for all other students. Everyone is invited, and chaperones are needed! The price for the trip is $939, and includes everything but food while we are there. Breakfast is included in the price. The price is still a little flexible since airlines only book so many months out in advance, but it will be set by the end of the week for a final price. The first payment of $100 is due September 25th. If you'd like more information, here's a link to a powerpoint that will tell you lots more.
We have grown our lessons program significantly this year, but still have room for a few more students! Ms. Thomas, our lessons teacher, is joining us again this year and will now offer lessons during the day to help alleviate the strain on parents to provide transportation after school. Voice lessons are $20/lesson, for $80 paid monthly at the first lesson every month for a lesson every week. Half time lessons are available as well at $20/lesson, $40 paid monthly at the first lesson every month for a lesson every two weeks. If interested, please email me and I'll get it scheduled!
With the trip to D.C. this year, fundraisers are a must. Our first fundraiser is World's Finest Chocolate, which your student has probably already brought home! Students can sell as many boxes as they'd like but must understand that once that box is handed to them, they are responsible for selling the entire box. Each box nets them $30 profit, with 60 bars of chocolate to sell in each box. To go on the trip, my suggested goal is to sell a box a day for the length of the fundraiser. At the time of writing this, we've already made $120 in profit on our very first day!
Our next fundraiser will be spirit wear, and I'll provide more information when that comes a bit closer. It starts at the end of the chocolate fundraiser (they are back to back), and students will have the opportunity to earn $9/item sold in profit.
Unfortunately, we are always in need of a little bit of extra money to run the program. There is a detailed overview of our budget in the Handbook, but the short version is that each class has a fee for participating. Choir is $80, and Piano/Theory is $20. That includes a T-shirt, and all uniforms needed. Fair Share money can be fundraised, but if you choose to pay it out of pocket, the amount is due on September 22nd.
Lastly, students and parents must sign the 2017-2018 Handbook together, notifying me that they agree to the rules and expectations of participating in the program. This is mandatory and needs to be completed as soon as you are able. Here's a link to the digital handbook for this year.
