Musical (Rock of Ages) Involvement

Big update: the choir program has changed it's involvement in the musical for this year, Rock of Ages. Below is an email I sent home to parents of all students that are involved.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I emailed you a few weeks ago about our choir’s involvement in the musical “Rock of Ages” here at Akins. I want to update you about how the rest of the semester is going to work. The theatre directors and I have gotten together and talked about what the performance will look like for the choir, and we’ve come to an agreement about how to finish out the semester in the best way for both of our programs.

With as much as is asked of your students, I didn’t feel it was a healthy decision for the choir program to require your student to be at the numerous rehearsals that “Rock of Ages” require. This includes a large amount of after-school time, and many of our students are incredibly busy with academics and other after-school commitments. The best way to make the musical work for both the choir and theatre programs is to have volunteers from the choir join the Theatre cast, and choir will be finishing up the semester with Solo and Ensemble music and preparations for our winter concert (The Madrigal Dinner), which is held December 15th, 16th, and 17th.

Your student may have questions about what happens next for them. I had the meeting with our theatre teachers this morning after 1st period, so I have not had a chance to talk to Men’s Choir yet face to face, but will explain everything to them in detail Monday when I see them next. I did get to speak with Women’s Choir face to face, and they understand what is going to happen. In short, the students will be preparing their Solo and Ensemble repertoire for next semester and preparing a piece for the Madrigal Dinner, as well as caroling music.

I’m happy to answer any questions that you may have - I know this is a big change from what I sent out earlier this semester. It is never my intent to confuse or give you false information, but the direction of the choir’s involvement has changed since I emailed you last. This is the first time that the choir and theatre programs have put on a musical working so closely together, and the theatre directors and I have agreed this is the right direction to move in.
